Desktops and Wallpapers
Happy Halloween from Pixojo
Continuing to Grow
Pixojo is continuing to grow as new desktops get added almost every day.
A big thanks goes out to all the Plurk users as they loved the Plurk & Friends desktop. Makes us want to create a few more to bring them back.
Wall-E backgrounds have also been a big traffic driver. Movie desktops seem to be a good area to expand upon.
Unfortunately, we are hard pressed to get users to sign up and submit pictures. We are working on some ideas to bring in people, but it just hasn’t happened yet.
Pixojo has been a success though in our minds. Our original goal was not a lot of users or massive traffic. It was getting a site up and running that we liked and that had some visibility. So far, so good.
Sex and the City Movie Wallpaper
It’s Pixojo’s first original wallpaper! Ok, so it’s not completely original. We took the sparkley and shiny movie poster, laid it upon a black background and thought the eye-popping pink looked very well.
Can’t say that I’ve seen the movie, or any of the TV shows, but it’s a nice addition none the less for the extremely large fan base the movie has.
Considering adding an articles category.
Looking for a bit of feedback here as we were thinking of adding an articles category. Here you could post about tools and tutorials on creating or working with desktops.
On one hand, we think it’d be a great way to educate users. On the other, it’d mix the cool wallpapers we have showcased with text posts making it harder to find desktops.
We’ll probably hold off for now, but feel free to leave your thoughts below.
Yea! WYSIWYG Editor Enabled
To make it easy to submit a desktop picture, we installed a WYSIWYG editor. Meaning, now all you have to do is hit the little image button (the one with the green tree icon) and a box will pop open asking you for the image URL. Easy as pie.
It also inclues and undo, redo, HTML and smilie button just for the fun of it. Plus, down in the lower right corner is a resize button as the window is kinda small to begin with. So just resize it.
Additional buttons are available, however we choose not to activate them at this time. To preserve the integrity of the design, limited formatting options are available.
The WYSIWYG editor should work in all browsers. Even Safari! (Even though Safari has some minor issues, it should still work.)
Enjoy!
Tags and Feeds Updated
We continue to work on the list of improvements to Pixojo. In the past few days We’ve updated the tags and feeds.
The tags now show any desktop tagged with that tag regardless if it is published or upcoming. It was limited to just published desktops, but I wasn’t a fan of that and felt it was to confusing. I really do think that tags are key to how this site will be categorized.
Also added a cool feed icon to the top of the right column and listed out two feeds. One for all desktops, upcoming and published, and one for just published desktops. There may be other feeds in the future, but for now, those are the main two.
We’ve also been working on adding at least one cool desktop a day to keep the site growing. That’s one thing we want to get done before promoting the site to much. However, a little promotion may help the site grow faster too.
And we have a search box & a task list.
On any good site, a search box is a necessity. Good thing we have one. It was really just a matter of clicking a few buttons. Since we’re still learning all the admin options, it feels like an accomplishment!
Next on the to-do list include:
- Designing the right and left sidebars.
- Seeing how things look in IE6 and IE7.
- Getting those tags to work a bit better/different.
- Getting a WYSIWYG editor.
- Figure out feeds for upcoming desktops.
- Getting some users. (That’s where you come in.)
- Adding lots of cool desktops.

Pixojo – An Introduction
What is Pixojo?
Pixojo is social voting site where you can submit your favorite desktop pictures and vote up the ones you like. It’s like Digg or Mixx, but only for desktop backgrounds.
Why Pixojo?
Pixojo was created because there are tons of sites that have amazing desktops that no one sees. From InterfaceLIFT to DeviantART, MacThemes forums, Flickr and so many just individually posted throughout the web on sites and blogs. We wanted to create one place where users could submit what they create, or find, and share it.
Yes, you could submit your desktop picture to one of those other sites, but sometimes there is a quality guideline or you have to wait for another person to approve it. Not here. Some desktop sites have so much going on that just finding the wallpapers is difficult to do. We aim to make it easy to submit content and easy to find it. Which reminds me, I need to get a search box on here.
Much like Digg did for news, we want to do for desktop pictures. Ok ok, so Digg is huge and wildly successful, I just mean we want to create the same type of site.
What can be submitted?
You can pretty much submit whatever you want. Notice how I said ‘pretty much.’ At this time it should be PG 13 or under. If you’ve seen what’s on TV lately, PG 13 isn’t that hard to accomplish anymore. Use your best judgement. We do reserve the right to remove anything.
What does Pixojo mean?
Pixojo is a combination of pixel and mojo. Basically graphic design mojo.
That’s the brief overview of Pixojo. Any questions?
Pixojo Born
With a few clicks of the mouse, some graphic design work and a few hours, Pixojo.com has been born! Not much going on yet, but hey, it’s a start.
